American rapper, songwriter, entrepreneur, and community activist aka Legend from LA, Nipsey Hussle was fatally shot in front of his business on March 31, 2019. Comparable to TuPac, was a crip gang member who turned his life around by giving back to his community. In his interviews Nipsey speaks on subjects that we rarely hear rappers and gangsters speak about. We can describe Nipsey using the modern-day term as being “woke.” In one specific interview from (early 2000s) he is asked why doesn't he choose to “flash” his hard earned money by buying fancy cars and jewelry, his response was he rather invest; this is the response that shook the world. What do you mean a rapper that wants to invest?! You mean you actually want to put your money toward things that matter?! To Nipsey, the longjevity of his money was vital. He continued to explain how he wants to invest in real estate and giving back to the hood. Nipsey, as a hustler, created jobs and opportunities for minorities to redirect their energy toward building their future and to stay out of the streets. “Working to empower and employ underprivileged groups through real estate investments, science and tech learning centers for teens, and other efforts in inner-city Los Angeles,” (Alegra, 2019). He made plenty donations, created jobs, and was a great spokesperson.
It is unfortunate that as an advocate against violence he was taken out the way he was. “Hussle was reportedly planning to attend an anti-gang violence meeting on the day he died,” (Alegra, 2019) HATE is vicious and ugly. A language we prefer not to speak. A man that was striving and working toward helping his community strive was shot and killed in front of his own business. He wanted to change his life around and not represent gangs as a form of violence and rebellion but instead as a form of unity. “His death has made it clear that his legacy will also be anchored to his successful journey out of the roughest corners of LA to become a community-focused business leader.” (Alegra, 2019)
